every trek leads to Cinque Terre
29 to 31 October 2004
The tiny coastal villages of Cinque Terre National Park ~ Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso ~ is my favourite part of Italy. These five towns are linked along the coastal line, and easily accessible by short treks.

This is my sketch of Riomaggiore.
This is Manarola. And Corniglia. And our groceries.
This is Vernazza. Our laundry drying over the heater.
The cooking of hotdogs in our sink.
It was the last day of October 2004.
Rome was not built in a day, but was seen in just two days
27 to 28 October 2004
How do you squeeze the Colosseum, Forodi Traiano, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Vatican City, Piazza del Popolo, Piazza di Spagna, Piazza Navena and Pantheon into two days? We did… with a whole lot of walking.

Italy and the Vatican City had some of the ugliest stamps around.
a striking time in Italy
21 to 26 October 2004
We stayed in Fusina. And visited Venice and Verona.
We stayed in Florence. And visited Pisa and Siena.

There was a bus strike today, which forced us to part with more of our money because we have to take the expensive 9 Euro ferry to Venice.
Pisa was interesting. Just seeing people pose with the leaning tower was the treat.
rain rain rain rain rain… what a pest in Budapest
16 to 20 October 2004
I think it practically rained everyday when we were in Budapest. So glad that the weather was a mile better when we reached Zagreb and Ljubljana.

The constant rain inspired this spread.
Croatia is definitely a beautiful city that’s manageable by foot.
In Ljubljana, we stayed in a prison that has been converted
into a hostel.
The first night we stayed in a spacious cell. The second night was spent in a smelly and crampy dorm with 12 other travellers. Including the two of us, that’s 14 stinky backpackers in a room (including us… hee hee).
